First of all, I would like to congratulate you for successfully installing latest Ubuntu Linux Distro. Ubuntu is most awaited Linux Distro with a lot of new features. This Linux distro is itself comes with a complete set of software packages, but to get the best out of it, you have to do some tweaks and Install Some Useful and Effective Software, which will enhance the productivity and utility of your Ubuntu OS. Though here I am going to share a top list of tips and trick to do after installing Ubuntu, but some of it will also equally work on Linux mint, elementary OS, and other Ubuntu derivative distributions.
1. Enable Additional Repositories
Many package repositories are not enabled in the Ubuntu System by default, i.e software packaged by Canonical. So before updating Ubuntu, repositories must be checked in. To do so, go to unity Dash, and search for software & update. In the other software tab, enables “Canonical Partners”.
Now close the application, and if it asks for software reload, ignores it.
2. Update The Software and Operating System
Now it’s time to update the operating system for the latest version Softwares and security bug fixes, which will ensure system stability. Both Command Line Interface “Terminal” and Graphical User Interface “GUI” are used to update the system.
For Graphical User Interface, go to unity dash and search for a software update. This will start an application which will search for recent updates for installation.
Here I recommend you to use Terminal ( Command Line Interface ). To update system, you have to type or copy/paste the following code into Terminal, hit enter and provide the password for further process.
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
If you get a question of “y/n” then select “y” for completing the subsequent task.
3. Install Media Codecs To Enjoy Movies
By default, Ubuntu does not provide any media codec to play multimedia files. So to enjoy movies, music, and entertaining application, you need to install media codecs. Use the following code into Terminal…
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

4. Best Use of Unity Tweak Tools
Ubuntu is powered by Unity Desktop Environment, which can be tweaked by unity tweaks tools. You can find this application on Ubuntu software center, or install it via Terminal by the following command…

5. Enable ‘Minimize on Click’
At Ubuntu unity app launcher, by default, the app does not get minimized by clicking on the app icon. So to make an app both maximize and minimize through launcher icon, you have to follow.

7. Awesome New GTK and Icon Themes
Ubuntu is comprising of nice looking default themes and icons, but sometimes it may feel boring. There are lots of GTK themes and icons out there to make the Ubuntu amazing and fabulous. 8. Customize App Menus
Ubuntu is having the option, where to show up the app menu. By default, it shows the app menu at the top panel to save the space of open windows. But sometimes it becomes very confusing to find out which app menus are where to select if many working windows are open.
To do that Go to “System Settings >> Appearance >> Behavior >> Show the Menus for a Window/In the window’s title bar”

Sometimes it may not be necessary to install additional graphics drivers because Ubuntu comes with a full set of application, which is required for smooth running of the operating system. But you can always tweak with additional drivers, and find out, which one is good for your machine. If you are a gamer or using any application, which uses heavy GPU, then you should use latest proprietary Linux graphics drivers.

Ubuntu comes with a lot of application in its repositories and Software Stores. Ubuntu software center is full of free software, which helps to enhance the productivity and utility tasking. Most of the important application, you can find on software center like gimp, chromium, vlc, deluge, steam etc.

12. Sync Your Cloud Account
Who does not want to keep all the personal and important documents onto cloud accounts? To do such task, Ubuntu comes with online cloud backup and easy synchronization process. Most of the important cloud providers can be used in Ubuntu. You can use Dropbox, Google Drive and Owncloud by native easy to use clients.
13. Tools/Tweaks For Laptop Power Management
Here are some tips, which help to get optimum output from Ubuntu Linux OS…
- Turn off WiFi and Bluetooth, when it’s not required.
- Reduced screen brightness to the optimum level.
- Reduced desktop effect by going to System >>Preferences >>Appearance >>Visual Effects >>None
